ZOE Ball has revealed she will be taking time off the radio after her mum was diagnosed with cancer.

The 53-year-old shared the devastating news this evening and revealed that Gaby Roslin will be stepping in for her on BBC Radio 2.

Alongside a picture of her mum Julia in hospital and surrounded by her loved ones, Zoe wrote:  “Heartbreakingly our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with Cancer. As many of you know from experience, these are extremely tough times. Mum is being incredibly brave.”

She continued:  “My brother Jamie & I are completely in awe of the brilliant Doctors, Nurses & support teams looking after Mum. Thank you."

Zoe went on to thank her family and friends for supporting her and also sent love to anyone else going through the same thing.

The star added: “I'm trying to be at work on breakfast as often as I can but occasionally need to be home with my Mama. thanks to Gaby for stepping in. Lots of love.”

The star has previously spoken about her complex relationship with Julia - after her parents separated.

She said in the past: "I didn’t see my mum Julia for a few years – she was very young when she married my dad and had me, and when they parted I lived with my dad and my other ‘mum’, his wife Diane."

They have been very close in recent years and Zoe supported her after her husband died in 2013.

Speaking to Mail, she explained: "She was with her third husband, Rick Peckham – she finally got it right – for 25 years, and he was such a wonderful man and so much a part of our family life.

"He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in January 2012 and he died in December – we all miss him terribly. When he was really ill, a house two doors down from us became available; we wanted him to spend his last few days by the sea, so they moved here."

She added: "I am looking after my mum a bit now; I see her pretty much every day. She is gorgeous."
